Abstract

Abstract
Starting with the concrete and recent example of ChatGPT, this paper explores
the impact of AI on intellectual work. The argument begins by discussing the potential
of AI to replace certain types of intellectual and creative work, such as writing and

translation. ChatGPT’s capabilities are explored, including its ability to generate hu-
man-like responses to text requests and its potential applications. This is a crucial de-
velopment, because in the past we used to think that “machines” would mainly replace

physical, operational and repetitive work, whereas now the risk of partial but relevant

“intellectual substitution” seems to be advancing. Finally, the ethical and political im-
plications of the use of AI in intellectual work are examined, including concerns about

job reconfiguration, obscurity and bias in algorithmic decision-making.
