Abstract
This article presents an original application of megatrends and participatory tools as defined and promoted by the European Commission (Joint Research Center, JRC) in a local context. Megatrends were the reference in the participatory process for the definition of the provincial Sustainable Development Strategy of the Autonomous Province of Trento (SproSS). At the end of the process, the concept of megatrends seems to have even entered the common vocabulary of public officials, indicating signs of social (Pahl-Wostl and Hare, 2004) as well as organisational learning. In the following paragraphs we present respectively: the JRC's definition of megatrends, the definition path of the Trentino Provincial Sustainable Development Strategy, a selection of results, and finally some considerations and ideas for further developments in the direction of anticipatory multi-level governance.
