Demographic scenarios for Italy: the critical issues facing an ageing country

Abstract

Talking about the ageing of the population in Italy means looking to the future and noting that the proportion between young and old will see, inexorably, the presence of young people thinning out more and more compared to an increasingly strong elderly component. ISTAT's demographic forecasts in this regard are stark in their clarity: by 2050 the ratio between people aged 65 and over and young people up to 14 will be 3 to 1.
