Abstract

The paper explores the “Pact for the Future” adopted by world leaders during the 79th UN General Assembly in September 2024, an action-oriented intergovernmental agreement that includes a “Global Digital Compact” and a “Declaration for Future Generations” as part of its annexes. This agreement, result of a multi-year effort to rethink international collaboration in response to current and emerging challenges humanity is facing, is based on two key decisions made by the UNGA early in this decade and marks the beginning of a new multilateralism aimed at fostering more inclusive and lasting global cooperation. The Pact is organized into five main areas, with concrete actions to promote sustainable development, peace, security, technological innovation, and global governance. Particular emphasis is given here on its more future-oriented topics, such as an intergenerational approach that includes future generations and the use of foresight to anticipate global risks and govern Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies. In conclusion, a reflection on the importance of practical engagement for the success of the Pact is developed, emphasizing the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing this ambitious global plan.
