Abstract

Beyond the tragic current situation, the Mediterranean area has been a war zone for centuries – and, as it actually is in the present, it risks being so again in the future, in many possible futures. War has been the core topic of theorizations that have not lost their validity to these days: Von Klausewitz is still a reference author for understanding the meaning of what a war is, despite having written his essay in the 19th century. However, in the present, the Mediterranean area is not only the center of a geopolitical crisis of very difficult solution, but also at the center of crises due to phenomena that did not exist in the past. For example, the global warming, which will increasingly influence possible future conflicts.

The work focuses on the specificity of the historical/cultural context(s) of the Mediterranean area. In doing so, the contribution will further highlight the importance of possible developments of events in this area, and their possible influence on the world situation as a whole. Above all, the work aims to underline how a war in the Mediterranean calls into question the meaning of Futures Studies, their role in the world.
